What Is a Mobile Column Lift?

Bring the Hoist to the Vehicle

A mobile column lift uses separate lifting columns positioned at the vehicle wheels. The columns operate together as a synchronised lifting system, raising the vehicle while leaving the underside largely unobstructed for service and repair work.

Unlike a permanently installed fixed hoist, mobile columns can be moved around the workshop and, depending on the system, configured in different numbers to suit various axle counts and heavy-vehicle applications. This makes them particularly attractive for mixed fleets and workshops where bay flexibility matters.

Why Mobile Columns?

Why Workshops Choose Mobile Column Lifts

Mobile columns combine heavy-duty capacity with flexible bay use and broad access beneath the vehicle.

01

Flexible Bay Use

Bring the lift to the vehicle rather than permanently dedicating the bay to one fixed hoist.

02

Clear Underbody Access

Support at the wheels leaves excellent access beneath the chassis for service and repair work.

03

Mixed-Fleet Versatility

Suitable systems can be configured for different vehicle types, axle counts and wheel arrangements.

04

Scalable Configurations

Additional columns may be used where the manufacturer and vehicle configuration allow.

05

Workshop Relocation

A mobile system can often be repositioned or moved with the workshop, subject to manufacturer requirements.

06

No Fixed-Post Footprint

Useful where permanent post locations would reduce bay flexibility.

07

Heavy-Duty Capacities

Specialist models are available for very high per-column loads and large-wheel applications.

08

Service Support

Iron Lift can assist with system selection, servicing, repairs and supported spare parts.

How It Works

How Mobile Column Lifts Work

A mobile column system brings the lifting equipment to the vehicle and raises the selected wheel positions together as a coordinated system.

01

Position the Columns

Move the required columns to the vehicle and align the wheel forks or approved lifting interface.

02

Configure the System

Connect or pair the columns according to the manufacturer's control system and vehicle arrangement.

03

Raise Synchronously

The columns lift together while the control system maintains the required synchronisation.

04

Service with Clear Access

Technicians gain broad access beneath the vehicle for inspection, service and repair work.

Configuration Guide

How Many Mobile Columns Do You Need?

The answer depends on the vehicle, axle count, axle loads, wheel dimensions and the selected manufacturer. Four-column sets are common, while multi-axle buses, trucks, combinations and specialist vehicles may require six, eight or more columns. The correct configuration must be confirmed against the lift manufacturer’s specifications and the actual vehicle.

Typical Configuration Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Mobile Column Lift FAQs

A mobile column lift uses individual lifting columns positioned around a heavy vehicle, normally at the wheels, and operates them together as a coordinated lifting system.

It depends on axle count, axle loads, wheel dimensions, vehicle configuration and the selected manufacturer. Four-column systems are common, while multi-axle and specialist vehicles may require more.

Capacity is model-specific and usually stated per column. Current ranges sold in the market vary widely, so total system capacity must be assessed together with vehicle and axle loads.

Wireless systems are available, but control and power arrangements differ by manufacturer and model. Iron Lift can recommend a suitable option for the workshop.

Potentially, provided the selected system accommodates the relevant wheel sizes, axle loads, vehicle configuration and capacity requirements.

One of their main advantages is mobility. Requirements still vary by manufacturer and the workshop floor must be suitable for the equipment and load.

Some manufacturers describe certain systems as suitable for outdoor or field use, but the exact equipment rating, surface, weather conditions and operating instructions must be checked before use.

Neither is universally better. Mobile columns prioritise flexibility, while a fixed platform or in-ground system may suit a dedicated high-throughput bay. The best choice depends on fleet, workshop and work type.

Iron Lift can assess servicing, inspection, repair and parts requirements across supported mobile column equipment. Send the manufacturer, model, serial number and photos.
